Nanda Maharaj: Krishna’s Loving Father

Once upon a time, in a beautiful, green village called Gokul, lived a very kind and strong man named Nand Maharaj. He was the head of the village, which meant he looked after everyone—the people, the fluffy white cows, and all the little children. He wore a big, bright turban and always had a warm smile on his face.

Nand Maharaj - the Foster Father of Krishna

Nand Maharaj had a very special secret to his happiness: his little son, Krishna.

To everyone else, Nand Maharaj was a brave leader, but to Krishna, he was simply "Dada"—the best papa in the whole world. Nand Baba loved Krishna more than all the stars in the sky. Because Krishna was a tiny, playful boy who loved to run around, Nand Maharaj was always there to keep him safe.

One of Krishna’s favorite things to do was go for "sky rides." Whenever Krishna’s little legs got tired from chasing butterflies or playing with his friends, he would reach up his tiny hands and shout, “Dada! Dada!”

Nand Maharaj would laugh, scoop Krishna up in his strong arms, and lift him high into the air. He would gently place Krishna right on his broad shoulders. From up there, Krishna felt like the king of the world! He could see the tops of the trees, the jumping calves, and the blue river Yamuna.

Nand Maharaj would walk through the village with Krishna on his shoulders, humming sweet songs. Even when Krishna played naughty pranks—like hiding his father’s shoes or sharing butter with the monkeys—Nand Baba never got angry. He would just hug Krishna tight and keep him safe from the rain and the sun.

Nand Maharaj taught Krishna how to be kind to animals and how to love everyone. He was like a big, sturdy umbrella that protected Krishna from everything. Every night, Krishna would fall asleep feeling safe, knowing that his strong, loving father was right there.

Even today, when we think of Krishna, we remember the kind man who carried him. Nand Baba shows us that being a father means being a best friend, a protector, and a shoulder to lean on.
